Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach high school aged students who have speech and language impairments. Many of my students are on the autism spectrum and require support to navigate the language of social situations and personal relationships. Many of my students have dyslexia and/or auditory processing disorder and require support to access curriculum taught within the mainstream classroom setting. Others are working to understand and overcome ADD, executive functioning deficits, specific language impairments, or receptive language disabilities. Some are overcoming all of the above!
What is wonderful about being a school-based speech and language pathologist is that all of my students' needs are so very unique and treatable.
Most of my students have been in and out of special education throughout their entire academic career. All of them are deserving of the very best resources to support their speech and language intervention. I really need a computer from which I will be able to keep daily therapy session notes, write thorough and impactful IEPs, and provide students with access to technology that will assist their educational journey.
My Project
Technology within any academic setting is vital to maximizing the impact of teachers everywhere. As a speech and language pathologist in an urban high school setting, I will use a computer to equip students with skills needed for today's technology-based world. Speech and language pathology in the high school setting is grounded primarily in language, with a focus on providing students with skills needed to utilize language required in today's world. With my computer, students will have access to the day's most important news, to websites and programs that break language down into more manageable segments, thereby increasing their comprehension of needed information.
Aside from student use, every professional needs a computer.
I need a computer to track and monitor student progress, to write detailed education plans, to communicate with parents regarding student progress and/or concerns, to keep attendance, and to research latest therapy techniques. There won't be a day that passes in which my computer will not be well utilized and totally appreciated.
