My students need headphones in order to access the read write software on student Chromebooks. They also need the mouse because many of them also have fine motor deficits which makes navigating a keyboard difficult.
I teach students with learning disabilities in reading and mathematics. Many of my students are from military families that move in and out of the area quite frequently. Our school also pulls from three nearby apartment complexes where many of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch.
Our school is lead by an incredible principal who made it her passion to make our school one-to-one with technology.
Through much fundraising including a fun techno dance, all students have access to technology with kindergarten having ipads, first and second grade having laptops, and third through fifth grade with Chromebooks.
I teach a population of Special Education students that so much want to do what their same age peers are doing in the classroom! Their peers are reading, writing, and learning using a personal Chromebook. For students with reading difficulties, this can be an embarrassing nightmare! Before technology, we would remove these students into a small classroom where they could have material read aloud to them or get extra one on one help spelling unknown words. But all kids want to belong, and this is not the way of the future. Our school system has purchased a read write software which allows students to access all written material with audio and spelling support. My students continue to need headphones and a mouse in order to "learn" independently like their peers. Just watching these kids accessing curriculum like their peers brings so much satisfaction!
