My Students

I am a special education teacher working in a resource classroom of a rural high school in northern Idaho. My students are ninth grade freshmen who are hard-working, kind, and worthy young adults in their first year of high school. I would like to utilize an interesting young adult novel in our classwork and allow the students to keep the novels after we're done with the unit. Hopefully, this will help instill in them a love of reading and encourage them to read various genres.

Many of my students suffer from disabilities like ADHD and anxiety.

I would also like to provide them with tools such as anti-anxiety stress balls to help them relax and focus in class.

My Project

Most students in my class do not like to read. When I asked them to name their favorite book, the majority of them had no answer. I have used this novel previously and found my students were excited to read what would happen next. Students talked about the novel amongst themselves outside of class. Many students, who had never read a book before, committed to reading the rest of the books in this series by Margaret Peterson Haddix. The students will read this YA (young adult) novel in class together. It is my hope is that it will spark in them a love of reading. Since they will be keeping the book, they will be able to highlight key phrases and make notes in the margins. They will also have at least one book in their home library.

The anti-stress balls will be available for my students when they are fidgeting, are anxious, or are just having trouble focusing.
