My Students

We are a new charter school in our 3rd year and only our 2nd year in an actual building. We're starting completely from scratch! Our students are resilient and a key part of building a strong foundation for a school family that will leave a legacy in the community.

The incoming 10th graders are the oldest in the school and will continue to be the leaders until they graduate in 3 years.

These students are being challenged in their curriculum in the classroom, and in developing the core values of the school.

My Project

A spectrophotometer is a really unique device! It is an analytical instrument used to quantitatively measure the transmission or reflection of visible light, UV light, or infrared light. Its applications span all the sciences we currently teach at our K-12 school - biology, chemistry, environmental science, and physics. There are many applications for this device including measurement of substance concentration such as protein, DNA, or RNA, growth of bacterial cells, and enzymatic reactions.

We're going to be using this device to analyze the environment right around us.

The water students drink and the air we breathe can be quality tested. In Biology, extracted DNA will be analyzed. In Chemistry, we can use the spectrophotometer to identify elements present in different solutions. It can be used as a part of many different labs we will do throughout the year.

Having this device in the classroom will teach students about the scientific process in general. They will learn that details and precise measurements are extremely important. Students will learn how to painstakingly document and track samples and results. The spectrophotometer isn't just for fun, it's real-world broad-spectrum applications will open student's minds to so many applications of science.
