I have been teaching in Albany, NY for eight years and I absolutely love being able to make a real difference in my students' lives. Most of them come from families that are low socioeconomic status. They arrive at school hungry, tired, and stressed. However, they are also interested in the world around them and enthusiastic about learning new things.
It is not simply my job to teach them... it is my job to give them the best 6.5 hours I can give them.
My Project
Reading with my students is my favorite thing to do, and hearing a read aloud is one of my students' favorite things to do. Unfortunately, many of the read alouds we have available do not have characters that look like my students; my classroom is extremely diverse with families from all different cultures.
These read alouds will engage my students with meaningful stories with characters they can see themselves in.
If our classroom can own these books, instead of borrowing them from the library, my students can read them as many times as they want. I can also use each book throughout the year to revisit different ideas and feelings that the characters, as well as my students, are facing.
These books would be an important addition to our classroom library.
