As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. My school is just one of 14 elementary schools in the Manchester School District. My students are only 22 out of nearly 400 students in the whole school. Despite the many challenges my students and their families face, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. My goal is for them to feel successful both inside and outside of the classroom.
My students are creative, clever, very energetic and all types of learners.
They like to move, they love math and they appreciate lots of positive attention. They are excited to explore new concepts and ideas each day. I value respect and friendship in our classroom. From the minute they walk in the door of our classroom, I focus on their potential and growth while they are with me. I believe in my students. We are kind and respectful to one another, and we all help each other learn in positive and meaningful ways.
My Project
Flexible seating allows students to take charge of their learning experience. Students are learning to make choices that work best for them, especially during testing. During independent work times they can choose a location in the classroom that best suits them with tools that can help them feel successful. Currently my students are choosing to work in a variety of locations in our room such as; wobble chairs, different size and leveled tables, or laying on our comfy pillows. Making sure my students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them to try their best and work independently.
I have noticed amazing differences in my students when they have the correct tools to help them.
They are more engaged, and get more work completed than when they are just sitting at their desk. Test scores are on the rise, and with a huge focus on that, it is nice to know there are other materials out there that will help my students succeed.
