My students are from a vibrant region in the state of Florida that takes pride in its rich, Latino cultural heritage. Because of this, our population is made up of many English Language Learners. It is up to us to make sure they get the best education they deserve. My students are young, ambitious and curious. They work together as a team to achieve common goals. They are supportive of their classmates and celebrate the successes of their peers. They are a hardworking group of students who display excitement and enthusiasm toward learning.
Our philosophy is: we build our future one step at a time!
Our school is a Title I/Renaissance school. The majority of our students are from low-income families, which is reflected by our 91% free or reduced-price lunch status. Although my kids face socioeconomic challenges, they come to school everyday willing to learn. I get the most satisfaction as a teacher when I see their faces light up when they finally "get it" or when I read a book that completely captivates their attention and takes them on a journey. Because materials are needed to achieve these goals, I have decided to start this project.
Many of my students have difficulty remaining focused and attentive for long periods of time causing learning to be challenging for them. When things get tough and hard, my kindergartners are typically more off task, which includes moving around. Having flexible seating such as wobble chairs and ball chairs, have proven to help with getting rid of some of those distractions! Students are more successful when they are allowed to move around as they are working.
By creating alternative flexible seating, it will allow my students to focus their attention better on their classwork while being able to move around and stay engaged in learning.
Allowing my students to make choices with their seating, as well as to allow movement while working, encourages student success and student growth in the classroom. Having these flexible seating options will allow my kindergartners to get their wiggles out and exercise using their gross motor exercises when they just need a break. Their core strength will also improve due to the using those stabilizing muscles while wobbling and bouncing in their new seats.
