Help me give my students an updated math curriculum that is adapted and specially designed to meet their needs while also following the extensions of the common core standards.
I teach in a self-contained classroom at a public middle school in Charlotte, NC. My students have a wide range of disabilities that include intellectual disabilities, multiple disabilities, visual impairments, autism and learning disabilities. My students are a sweet and enthusiastic group who have developed a love of learning in both the classroom and school community.
My classroom celebrates each student’s unique abilities and potential.
Not only are many cultural and ethnic differences represented but also neurological, cognitive, sensory and emotional ones.
My Project
My classroom of special needs middle school learners require a specialized and adapted curriculum to help them learn. Last year, my students were exposed to the Attainments Teaching to Standards curriculum and gained higher level concepts such as measurement, algebra, data analysis and geometry. The curriculum provides colorful visuals, real-life story math problems and a task analysis approach that breaks down how to solve problems into steps.
My classroom of special needs middle school learners require an updated version of the Attainments math curriculum to continue their growth, progress and success with upper level math concepts.
An updated curriculum would allow my students to apply and generalize these previously learned concepts using new math stories.
