I have an amazing group of children who come to school eager to learn and explore. Despite the physical, emotional and learning challenges these children face, they are resilient and have overcome daily difficulties and always try their best. My students have moderate to severe disabilities, some of them are non-verbal and others who speak have limited speech and difficulty expressing themselves, but as a Special Education teacher, I know that every child has a potential when they are inspired. These children learn best by doing.
My students will greatly benefit learning more about their world and environment when exploring with meaningful, hands-on, high-interest science materials.
I am so blessed to have the privilege to work with these children! They inspire me to continuously refine my skills to become a better teacher.
My Project
My students are visual and kinesthetic learners. They learn best when they are able to explore, see and touch what they read and learn from books. As a Special Education teacher, I don't get Science materials for my classroom so I'm always digging and looking for curriculum that will be meaningful and interesting for my students. My goal is that my children learn and have access to an enriching curriculum. The materials I have chosen are to foster creativity and imagination and to inspire my students' love for science. The Design and Play STEAM Kits allow children to create and customize balloon powered planes, cars, and boats. How fascinated will the children be when they are able to see real specimen to learn about organism groups, life cycles, and parts of plants and animals! Kids will learn how magnets attract and repel with the magnet kit. The Wild Animal collection will provide a realia of the animals the children read about in books. My students will have the opportunity to experience what it's to be an archaeologist with the kinetic sand play with dinosaur figures.
With these new science materials, my students will be able to learn through exploration and bring science to life and foster their love for the subject.
My children with autism have difficulty interacting with their peers, turn taking and sharing. These materials will help my students not only learn more about science and their environment, but also learn the skills for team building, sharing, and providing opportunities to expand their communication.
I am hopeful that with your generosity my project will come to fruition and my students will have this amazing opportunity to experience with these materials.
