Our students are inner-city kids. Many of our kids are at or below poverty level. Our school has 100% free lunches. Students are working hard to overcome their neighborhood and home situations. They need support from our staff in many areas, especially appropriate social development. They are great kids who just need more support. We are working hard to ensure that they grow up with appropriate coping skills and a good foundation that will lead to successes later in life.
My Project
The sensory toys, including the spin disc, will allow children to self-soothe when they are upset or need a break. They will be able to come to my office as an alternative to having a meltdown and missing out on valuable class time. With these sensory items, the students can take a quick break and self-regulate and return to class.
On any given day multiple students show up at my door overwhelmed, upset, or just ready for a break.
These tools will enable me to offer them a variety of choices so that we are able to find what is right for their needs. Many students enjoy using fidgets or sensory items as a break from class work.
I’m lucky to have an office away from the hustle bustle of the school day. These tools will help me create a safer more welcoming space for the students who need a calm retreat that will ultimately allow them to return to their classroom ready for success.
Many of our students benefit from a visual reminder of the progress they have made, and that's where behavior charts come in! They love giving themselves a stamp or sticker to show that they made their goal for the day. Goals include simple tasks such as being in attendance for school, and range to much more complex tasks, such as using calm words to express themselves. It is so very important to celebrate successes large and small! The colored paper will allow me to tailor charts to each individual child.
