Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom serves students in kindergarten through third grade who have been identified as being on the autism spectrum or a specific learning disability. The school is located in a suburb of Los Angeles County and the students come from diverse socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds.
The students are all working towards the same grade level standards as their peers despite the many academic, social, and behavioral challenges of autism that they experience on a daily basis.
Many of the students have limited language skills and auditory and visual processing limitations and require speech-to-text and text-to-speech technology support for reading and writing activities.
My Project
The tablets, laptop, and headphones will benefit my students identified with special needs as they utilize the speech-to-text and text-to-speech capabilities of Chrome extension. My students will be able to read grade-appropriate material and document and share their ideas on their blogs and utilize video. We are fortunate to have one Microsoft Surface Go from a project earlier this year, but it is clear my students need access to more devices. Having a variety of devices will address the range of ages and abilities in my classroom.
Technology is utilized in all 21st-century careers, and it is needed in my classroom as I educate my students.
The apps, programs, and features that technology provides will support my learners and help to prepare them for 21st-century careers. Headphones that cover the ears are necessary as most of my students are highly sensitive to sound and earbuds do not fit their small ears.
