I teach a K-2 bilingual class in an urban school with 85% of the students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. All of my students are brand new to the United States. My students enter my classroom with little or no English. Many of them have never had a school experience in their native country. It is my job to prepare them for the regular education classroom.
My students are from 5 different countries, speaking 4 different languages.
My students are all eager and excited to learn.
My Project
These special supplies will help us go above and beyond the curriculum and also allow my students to express themselves creatively. Students will be able to create a collage for a father's day gift. Students will be able to watch the butterfly life cycle in action by watching the metamorphosis of 5 caterpillars to be released later as butterflies. They will watch seeds grow during our plant life cycle unit. They will decorate a pot and include their plant for a mother's day gift.
Having special supplies such as stickers and glitter paint pens will also allow for them to create artistically.
We have an outdated world map that I would like to replace. This is especially important for my students who are all from countries other than the United States. We include the map as part of the discussion of where everyone is from and we write their names on the laminated map next to their country. It really makes them feel special and proud of their heritage.
