This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I have the privilege of teaching reading to a special needs class of 13 K-4 students. Most of the students I teach come from economically disadvantage households. For many of our families in our community, education is not a priority and consequently there is very little support from home. Our district is located in a rural delta area of which is mainly a poverty stricken area.
As their teacher, it is my job to make available and expose my students to as many avenues possible to spark their interest for reading. Our eager students are grasping important concepts of reading and are making remarkable progress in spite of facing the incredible odds they encounter in their poverty stricken homes. Most often school serves as a home away from home.
We are in need of a VCR/DVD player to replace the stolen one we had for our listening center. We were utilizing our phonics library which is equipped with VHS tapes. This phonics program gave my struggling readers experience to much-needed success and allowed them to have a feeling of being in charge of their learning.
With your help my students can be the readers and leaders of tomorrow that they have strived and worked so hard to be.
