Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is my 2nd year as a school librarian. I see all students including special needs students in grades K-5. Our students are very diverse coming from many different backgrounds and cultures. We have a very busy library that is open before and after school. Our school is going through a great transformation. After many years of classes being in separate buildings, we are finally joined together in one new building. The construction is complete and the kindergarten and fifth graders will be back. With this new addition, many more students will be working in the library. The library is also open on Saturdays to families. Our library is the hub in the school. My school is a Title I school where everyone receives free lunch. Many of our families are new to the country, experiencing homelessness or some other financial hardships. My students come into the library each day to learn something new. They come at their lunchtime and on Saturdays for extra help. Although they are facing many hardships this does not stop their enthusiasm for learning.
My Project
I work with several Special Education classes from grades K-5 in the library. I am a new librarian and starting to implement a Lego Club in the library. I am requesting 6 large bins to store my Duplo blocks. We have received a lot of Lego through many grants from DonorsChoose. What would be very helpful is to have a storage container so my special needs students can bring the container to the table and then bring it back when they are finished. These containers are very useful because they stack on top of one another and have a lid. I chose to get a clear bin so my students can easily find the materials and being them to the table without any pieces falling. We will use the smaller containers to store crayons and the letter size container to store paper.
