Special Scientists in a Growing Garden

Help me give my students the soil, seeds, and tools to rehabilitate our school garden and make it wheelchair-accessible along with books and activities to learn about gardening in our classroom.

My Students

All children love to play, but for my 3rd, 4th and 5th graders with autism and other developmental disabilities, playtime is learning time, whether it happens in the gym, classroom, playground, or in our school garden. My students' favorite activities are going outside, building with LEGOs, playing "bookstore" with a cash register, and playing with Play-Doh.

Every day, our students are reading, writing, talking with their voices or their communication devices, and learning how to get along with one another.

They are eager to learn--they work hard and they play hard! Outside the classroom, the children are feeding birds, joining community events like the pumpkin patch or a baseball game, participating in Special Olympics, and gardening.

My Project

My special education students need a place to learn about the natural world with hands-on projects such as growing vegetables and flowers to attract pollinators, feeding birds and other wildlife, and observing the changes of the seasons. The school garden, neglected for several years, is the perfect place for us to learn while we rebuild an outdoor classroom that will benefit the entire school.

Our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade scientists don't let their disabilities slow them down!

They have already rebuilt one flower bed, planted pansies and bulbs, and installed bird feeders in the garden. Now we need resources to continue this exciting project. The garden soil will allow us to use beds that have been built but stand empty, while the addition of the raised planter will allow wheelchair users to garden independently. A butterfly kit will bring science to life this spring as we watch the life cycle of our caterpillars, and the books and science flipcharts will allow me to teach science lessons in the classroom and in the garden that students will participate in and remember for years.
