The music room at our school is always buzzing with activity. I have about 400 little musicians in grades K-6 who love to listen to music, sing, dance, and play instruments. We see each other only once or twice a week, so we want to make every minute count!
Our school is a Title I elementary building.
I work with great kids and amazing colleagues. Our kids are eager to learn and are always looking to impress. We are a National Blue Ribbon School and a Title I School of Distinction. Our school is in a suburban setting, in a district with 6 elementary schools. My building has the highest poverty rate in the district (near 50%) but also consistently gets high test scores.
My Project
My students begin learning how to play the recorder in third grade and continue with recorder playing through sixth grade. Throughout their upper elementary years, they continue to make progress on the recorders. We start like so many do with "Hot Cross Buns," but by the time they leave elementary school, these kids are playing full scales and much more complicated music.
Many of my special needs students struggle with the recorder.
They often lack the fine motor skills needed to be able to achieve a musical sound. These students would benefit greatly from a Nuvo+ Recorder. The Nuvo+ uses silicone pads to cover the holes so students don't need to have the precision and finger strength that the typical recorder requires. The silicone pads provide a tactile feel and easily seal the hole to prevent squeaks that happen if a finger doesn't cover the hole completely. My special needs students will have a much easier time making music with their peers if they have a Nuvo+ Recorder at their fingertips.
