Special Needs Students Needing Social/Emotional Books
My students need books to help them learn social/emotional skills, various sensory fidgets, non-fiction readers and Lego's for STEM related activities.
My students are a lively bunch who love coming to school and learning! My students have a wide array of disabilities ranging from autism to speech/language impairment to specific learning disability. They attend a Mild Special Day Classroom (SDC) where their academic and social/emotional needs are met in a smaller group setting and all curriculum is differentiated to fit their abilities.
All students learn in a different way, which is why my classroom is so unique.
Inclusion is important for every child's development. My students not only learn in the small group setting, but they also have the chance to play and learn along side their typical peers in a general education classroom where they may receive support for academics, social/emotional, or to build and maintain friendships.
My students are a joy to work with and all bring strengths to the classroom. They work hard and have big dreams for themselves; I am here to support all of my students in achieving their dreams and making them successful, inside and outside of the classroom.
My Project
My students do best when abstract concepts (such as social skills and emotional self-regulation) are broken down to easy and clear steps.
These social/emotional books help my students understand social norms and cues and better help them to make and maintain friendships.
My students would also benefit from having non-fiction magazines delivered on a weekly basis. My students love non-fiction readers, however it is difficult to find readers at their reading level. Time for Kids would help my students access non-fiction text.
Both Lego's and sensory fidgets allow my students to better self-regulate and would allow for my students to better access the curriculum by allowing them to have educational, STEM-related brain breaks throughout the day.
