My Students
On any given day in my classroom, students struggle with being able to focus and learn because their sensory needs are not being met. Many students struggle with a sensory processing disorder which greatly impacts how they receive messages from their senses and turn them into appropriate behavior.
Our school is a wonderful place where staff work hard to support the special needs of each child.
Over 90% of our students are identified as At Risk. In my classroom, students have been identified as having disabilities. Some of these disabilities, paired with sensory integration difficulties, make focusing on learning and social skills a struggle. I have seen students in the midst of a meltdown completely transform into calm and ready to learn after deep pressure and other sensory strategies were used. I am constantly looking for ways to improve the learning experience of my students and this project would do just that!
My Project
The materials that I am requesting will be used to set up a sensory area. In this area, students will visit on a rotating schedule that is designed to meet their individual needs. For example, students that need deep pressure and calming may complete a yoga routine, participate in deep pressure activities using the foam/plastic rollers (assisted by an adult), and then rest with the weighted blanket before returning to learning tasks. Students may also use the star weighed lap pillow for extra pressure while at their seats. Students that require stimulation may complete a yoga routine and return to their desk the vibrating pillow on the back of their chair. Depending on each student's specific needs, their schedule and use of the items will differ from child to child. Students will feel physically ready to engage in learning once their sensory needs have been met.
This project will positively change the way my students learn on a daily basis.
