Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My class is comprised of 14 self-contained students. My class is one of 6 self-contained classrooms in the school. My students' disabilities vary, but typically my students have autism or intellectual disabilities. My students benefit from direct instruction in academic skills and require adult support to complete activities. They are working on their communication skills, social skills, basic academics and functional skills to be successful outside of the classroom. My students love to move around and enjoy interactive games. I am constantly looking for materials and activities that keep my students engaged for long periods of time and work on their academic skills as well as functional skills.
My Project
These materials will make a huge difference in my students' education. My students are not very independent and require a lot of repetition in order for them to learn basic academic skills. They often get bored doing the same activities over and over again and enjoy it when I am able to turn those activities into games. With limited resources and time I am unable to create fun activities for the entire day for each of my 14 students who have their own individual needs. These particular materials will allow my students to practice their skills in a fun and exciting way.
The counting activities like the bugs and treasure coins is a great way for my students to practice counting out objects in a fun way.
The sequencing activity will also allow them to practice first, then and next. My students also need to work on their independent skills as well as their fine motor skills. The materials with the numbers and letters in beads will be a fun activity to practice skills and work on their fine motor skills. These materials will be extremely beneficial in my students' learning.
