One of the quotes from our Treasure Hunter's pledge says (adults in my school building are Treasure Hunters) "All students are capable of success...no exceptions." I truly believe that. My students may not learn as fast or the same way as the student sitting next to them, but they CAN learn!
The third grade special education students on my caseload have a variety of disabilities including autism, ADHD, visual impairment and learning disabled.
Some of them are pulled out in a small group once or twice a day, where I can work on individualized remedial skills, such as basic computation and numeracy, sight word recognition, decoding, comprehension, sentence writing, etc. Others get their needs met solely in the classroom, where I make sure to differentiate their instruction, and provide accommodations and modifications to ensure their success. My students need more visual and tactile learning activities such as the Giant Magnetic Array set, reading rods kit, and story sequencing set.
My Project
With these wonderful activities, I would be able to reinforce skills that they have not yet mastered from 1st and 2nd grade to help narrow and/or close their achievement gaps. My students have varying learning styles: auditory, visual, kinesthetic etc. So having activities that are differentiated to tap into their individual needs while working on the same skill is a MUST! These materials will be utilized in small groups inside the classroom and during pull out time. I would also be able to use these materials within the classroom for students that are not on my caseload that may just need some extra help acquiring a skill.
With your generous donations, I will be able to alleviate some of the anxiety and stress that some of them have about learning.
At their age, some are becoming aware that learning doesn't come easy for them. These materials will help me show them that there are many ways of acquiring knowledge and that learning can be fun. My goal is to supply them with skills that will last a life time. Thanks so much in advance!
