I teach a group of first grade students who live in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains of Eastern Kentucky. There is an equal mix of girls and boys. They are fun-loving, bright, energetic, and extremely eager learners. They each absorb information like a sponge, and love learning. My classroom is a classroom with varying needs. Some students are ADHD, some Autistic, and some Developmentally Delayed.
They are at a very critical time in their life, the beginning stage of reading and writing.
Their focus should be on learning, rather than what they don't have or what they need to be successful in school.
My Project
I am requesting tables and table linens for Special Needs Night. This event is attended by most families serving students with special needs, not only families in our school, but families within the county. We have a huge turnout each year. This is a special night for our special students with Autism, ADHD, and other special needs to be celebrated through performances. Not only do our students perform, we have performers come in from outside to entertain them. As the event host we need to ensure our students, parents, and other guests have a warm and welcoming atmosphere to enjoy the performances. Our students work so hard for this night and we want them to shine. In addition, we serve food at this event. These tables will make a huge difference. No more lunch room tables for our ADHD and Autistic children. They will have a place at the table to be served, to get up and move about, one that is inviting, and more appropriate for such an event. This may seem to be a one time usage each year for these tables and linens and that is just not the case. Our ADHD and Autistic students will be able to enjoy Grandparent Day events, Veteran's Day activities, Spring Flings, and other special school events with these materials.
These tables and linens will be more relaxing for our ADHD and Autistic students than the current lunchroom tables that are being used for the event.
We would love to roll out the red carpet, if you will, for our special needs children and these tables will do just that! These materials will be a wonderful addition and make a huge impact. Be a part of making this project a reality for our special needs students by donating. Thank you!
