Special Needs Classroom: Reading Area and Activity Supplies
My students need a reading area/workstation to listen to audio stories, read if possible, and relax. They also need new ways to practice simple skills like colors and numbers.
I work with the special needs student who fall under the moderate to severe special needs category. Our days revolve around their unique needs and working to build on functional living skills and state mandated core content standards.
My students are all special needs student that have a moderate to severe disability.
They are middle school age and are in the grades 5-8. They all have unique goals that they work on and can range from learning to use a form of communication like picture exchange, to telling time, using money, putting on clothes, and even toileting. They also work on specific grade level core content standards and take a version of the state test like all other students.
My Project
The resources requested will be used to create a reading corner with a rug and some comfy bean bag chairs. I want my students to have a comfy place to curl up and look at a book, listen to stories read aloud to them, listen to audio books, and even work on the iPad.
I want to use the pattern blocks and activity mats to work on color recognition, sorting by various attributes (color, size, shape, etc.), problem solving (completing the activity mat puzzles), counting, and pattern completion.
I want to use the Uno cards to work with my students on social skills, number recognition, turn taking, color recognition, and conversation skills in a small group setting. Many of my students lack the skills to socialize and work in a group with their non-disabled peers. I plan on inviting non-disabled peers into the room to play Uno with my students. This will also be a way for my students to gain some number and color recognition in a way that will be fun and not seem mundane.
Donations will help me provide a few new activities and a special area for my students to sit and work, read, or interact with peers without sitting in their desk.
I will be able to set up a unique classroom reading area that will be welcoming and make my students feel more comfortable in my classroom. It will also be very welcoming to any peers who are invited to be peer tutors or to help us learn social skills through games.
