Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a speech therapist working in a District 75 special needs public school in Brooklyn, serving middle school students. All of our students have special needs, ranging from diagnoses of autism, intellectual disabilities, and severe emotional needs that make learning in a typical classroom difficult. Three-quarters of our student population comes from low-income households and most qualify for free school lunch. Our student population is very mixed, and within a diagnosis so are their abilities and needs. Our school provides them with smaller special education classes and extra support through therapy, counseling, and individualized attention so that they can reach their highest potential.
My Project
I am a speech therapist at a special needs public middle school. As a speech therapist, we wear many hats and support our students in many different ways. I help them expand their communication skills, work on social skills, and also support them in developing more independence. Our students are visual and hands-on learners.
We adapt most materials to meet our student’s needs, as well as to make them more appropriate for them.
Something we often do is laminate an activity, and put pieces of an activity in Velcro so they can unstick an item and interact with it. For example, we are doing a lesson in personal hygiene, and one of the hands-on activities is for them to sort pictures of what they do/don’t need when washing their hands. Or to put the steps in order to brush your teeth. We are able to make durable and manipulative activities like this with the use of a laminator, lamination sheets, and Velcro. We need materials in order to better adapt and personalize learning for our students. That means activities with laminated work and Velcro that they can manipulate and engage with.
