Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am the Special Education/Resource teacher in my school. Students of ages 5-13 come to my they range from K to sixth grade. They are predominantly from Afro-American families with limited literacy. The students have disabilities ranging from Learning Disability, Mental Retardation, Emotional Disturbance, Autism, etc.

My Special Education students are below in their learning and comprehension skills compared to their normal peers in General Education Classrooms. Once books are read to them, the students will be able to comprehend the content of the stories. They are just learning to summarize the main content of stories read to them, discuss cause and effect problems and to highlight the top events of the stories.

Leap Frog series provide them not only books, but they even read them to my students. Once read, my students can listen to stories. I can then make them summarize, answer pertinent questions from the main ideas in the story, and give a summary of the content. I can make them work on cause and effect problems from the story. This will prompt them to higher level thinking.

Teaching to normal students is one thing. But, the students in my Special Education Classroom are disabled and are generally poor in their reading and comprehending skills. The donation requested above will improve the reading and comprehension skills among my students with disabilities. Any help to them will be an endeavor for a deserving human community and will indeed be service to Almighty.
