Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My students have limited exposure because they are from a small, rural environment. My student population is 100 percent African- American. Ninety-five percent of my students are identified as low-income and 100 percent of them receive free lunch. Although my students are in high school, many of them struggle to read on level. Most of them are at least 2-3 grades below grade level. Because they are from a small town, they are extremely curious about the world.

My Project

My project is designed to create a learning environment that is motivating for my students. Currently, our students are being staggered into the classroom. They come two days per week. I really want my students to feel that at least for those two days they are entering an environment where they do not have to worry. Students learn better when they enter a room that is designed to stimulate their brains. It is imperative that when a student enters a classroom they are focused on positive visuals and inhaling pleasant aromas. When my students enter the room, I want them to feel as if they are entering another world-one not only more pleasant than many of their home environments but one designed for learning. This is especially important for my special needs students. They need to be comfortable and as stress free as possible.

The essential oils and diffusers will emit a pleasant aroma designed to keep students both calm and invigorated.

The curtains will be used to block the outside distractions that usually takes the students' minds off of their learning.
