Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are autistic, intellectually disabled, speech impaired and/or other health impaired. Each one thrives on structure and routine. Their favorite time of day is "Sign-in & Calendar" when they use the ActivBoard, greet each other, perform calendar tasks, and "show off."
Our school is very supportive and inclusive.
My students enjoy participating in activities such as reading buddies, grade level inclusion, and peer to peer mentoring. Wherever we go in school, other students call out "hello" to my students and call them by name. They ARE an important part of our school community.
My Project
We are in need of a new personal laminator and pouches for student communication boards, icons, schedules, and individualized activities. Each student has very specific needs that require teacher made materials. Students often bend, mouth, or tear materials. In the past, I have found that materials are more durable when laminated with a thicker material than the school can offer.
I make 2 binders at the beginning of the school year for each student.
One binder contains all their communication icons and schedules. The other binder is used to make a student portfolio. Portfolios are important because they contain all student data and work samples. These binders can easily be sent with students who change classes, programs or schools.
The wagon is a replacement item. Our current wagon is on it's last wheel. We use it to transport play equipment and students who tire easily while traversing the campus. One of my students needs to "ride" quite a bit as her oxygen levels drop easily. With a wagon, she can have the option to ride or walk. This allows her to remain as independent as possible.
