My students are special. They face severe challenges each and every day, in many different ways. They are the definition of resilience. My students each receive special education services for a variety of disabilities including autism spectrum disorders, cognitive impairments and severe multiple disabilities. Each student spends time in our special education classroom and time in their own general education classroom.
As a special education teacher, I am expected to provide differentiated, evidence based instruction to all of my students.
In order to do this, I need adequate support from my administrators, fellow teachers, parents and my materials.
My Project
These special materials, including noise cancelling headphones, carpet spot stickers and two different types of timers will help my students in their daily classroom routines.
Noise cancelling headphones will help my students with unique sensory needs in order to reduce noise that causes de-regulation.
These can be used throughout their day in our classroom, as well as during their time in general education settings and during circuits!
Digital and sand timers will help my students who require visual support. These will help them during daily independent, center time and when earning rewards to show them quickly and visually how much time they have left for their activity. This will help ease transitions, reduce anxiety and promote independence!
Slant boards will help my students when completing specific tasks, as well as serve as a flexible seating option! Most of my students struggle with their fine motor skills, so using a slant board assists them in their daily writing and work activities by giving them more support.
Behavior counters will help ease stress and difficulty for staff when tracking behaviors. We will be able to easily and quickly track target behaviors in order to increase or decrease them. Using these counters is a discrete, easy way to simplify one of our daily jobs!
