Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students participate in a high school classroom designed to educate students with severe/profound intellectual disabilities.
My students are from low-income households and receive free lunch, in a school with a limited budget to provide the materials necessary for my students.
The goal of the classroom is to increase academic skills, while also developing functional life skills and increasing life and career readiness. Several of my students are English Language Learners, most come from low-income backgrounds, and several have sensory needs. My students stay with me for several years. Many come to school daily, even if they are ill, as school is a place for them to be with others, receive meals, and be comfortable.
My Project
The students in my Exception Child Services special needs classroom would benefit from the Lakeshore Learning Real-World Stem Challenges greatly because it would provide them with an to opportunity together to solve real-world science problems. It allows them the opportunity to use critical thinking in scenarios they have not had exposure to.
STEM activities would provide my students the opportunity to engage in project-based learning, using inquiry and hands-on approaches to solving a problem.
The students are part of a Title I school community, where resources are quite limited. Science materials are essential, but only provided by the teacher, severely limiting opportunities for learning. The more opportunities they are given to learn in new, and novel ways, the more excited they are to come to school everyday.
