Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The 4th through 6th grade learners in my mild-to-moderate support needs special education classroom are highly motivated to earn behavior points that they can spend in my classroom "store." These children were not able to attend in-person school during the years when their academic and school-appropriate social and behavioral skills would have developed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. We are now working hard to build these skills.

Disadvantaged special education students are often hungry and need incentives to behave appropriately and to focus on learning.

At our elementary school in Richmond, CA, 75% of our Black and Hispanic student population is socioeconomically disadvantaged, and 70% of our students are English learners.

When we discussed what type of items they would like to "purchase" in the classroom store, it was touching that their requests were so modest. My students often save their items from the classroom store to take home and share with their siblings.

I have been funding the classroom store so far this year. It is not sustainable for me to continue doing this, so I am now reaching out to generous Donors Choose community for help. Thank you.
