My students range in age and ability, within our small self contained classroom we have students with different abilities: some cannot walk, some cannot talk, some have severe brain injuries, some are autistic and some have down syndrome... but to me, they are all incredible in their own way. Being their teacher is such an honor and I love to see them understand a topic that we may have been working on for weeks. We differentiate all our lessons in here and enhance them with technology. I provide them with an experience and education that they may not receive at home. Some students do not even have access to internet in their own home and their only exposure to technology is at school. This means they are already at a disadvantage compared to the rest of the world, and adding their special needs on top of it makes it even more difficult.
My Project
Today's learners benefit greatly from having touch screen tablets and computers in their classroom. It provides those students who struggle to use a mouse to control the computer the same access to technology that their peers have. In a Special Education classroom, it is critical to provide technology to all students. In my classroom, students struggle to use a computer that is not a touchscreen. Providing iPads to those students means they will be receiving the same material online as their peers, just through an iPad rather than a typical computer.
These iPads will open up a whole new world to my students, in the most positive way.
They will be able to enhance their education by doing the same stuff students do on a computer without the barrier of using a mouse. Students will be able to play educational games, safely search the internet, enhance their STEM skills, and even open the door to new possibilities by creating and editing videos assigned to them during a project. The benefit of iPads are endless and with your help, we can create a more inclusive environment for my students when it comes to technology.
