Our school is a kindergarten through 8th-grade school in the Fairmount area of Philadelphia. Most of my students are bused to school. They are from all areas of Philadelphia. There are 20 students with all intellectual disabilities in this life skills support classroom. The students work on academics, as well as skills that they will need for independent living.
The students enjoy coming to school each day.
They really love their peers and the adults who work in the classroom! We have birthday parties for each student and we celebrate every holiday! We are all one big family!
My Project
The special education students often require multiple breaks throughout the school day for various reasons. These breaks prevent the students from becoming frustrated and overwhelmed. The breaks can prevent inappropriate behavior. Students require an appropriate area that they can relax in and cool down. Students will be able to sit on the bean bag chair or the pads. The students will have a rug that surrounds them to sit on, instead of sitting on the wood floor. Students will be able to relax using the rain stick, magnetic balls, and sensory balls. The students will be able to use a timer, in order to independently time their break. In order to reward students for taking a break appropriately, I have included a reward box.
