Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our classroom is a place where students with learning and emotional disabilities can receive individualized support. Our classroom is located in a Title I low income school. Some of the students in my classroom are homeless. All of my students are classified as having disabilities and most of them are English Language Learners. Students receiving support in our classroom have a variety of disabilities that make learning difficult. The students in our classroom cognitively range from grades k-4.
My goal as a teacher is to make my classroom feel like home to my students.
I want them to come to school every day feeling like they belong and are a part of a family. My classroom will be a community of learners that work together to accomplish their goals and dreams. I want my classroom environment to feel bright, energetic, encouraging, and safe. They learn best from hands on activities, group work & having flexible seating options.
In our community, we know that our children are our future so we are working as hard as we possibly can to ensure that every student accomplishes their goals, as big or small as they may be, going one step at a time.
My Project
The students in our classroom are eager to learn to read and write, but they need help! The students this project will support are wiggly students. They are all unique in their own way but they share one thing in common; they're learning to be students! These students have a variety of disabilities that make it difficult to sit still and focus.
The items that we're requesting will help our class learn to self-regulate by recognizing what their bodies need in order to be successful.
I currently allow my students to move around the classroom as they work to make them feel more comfortable being in a relaxed setting. As they more around the classroom I have noticed them leaning against walls and cabinets to support themselves while using books and folders to do their work on.
Flexible seating like Flex-Space Balance Ball Seats in a special education classroom would impact my students and alter their learning experiences and I feel that flexible seating will really work for my students. The flexible seating chairs that were requested will help the students enjoy the freedom of moving around the classroom with the individual lap desk. A variety of seating options like Flex-Space Big Beanbag Seats will provide students with ADD/ADHD a chance to wiggle while they learn. All of our students with special needs would immediately benefit from the requested items.
