I teach early childhood special education at an elementary school in Washington, DC. I have 12 amazing students whose disabilities include Down Syndrome, Autism, Developmental Delays, Behavior Disorders, and a variety of other disabilities. All 12 of my students receive Speech and Language Therapy and we struggle daily with effective communication in the classroom. I am asking for a Sign Language Learning Kit from Hatch Early Childhood. We implemented a few basic signs in the classroom last year and they have been extremely effective, especially for my students who are Autistic or have unintelligible speech. For example, one student who was previously non-verbal, is now able to sign, "Help, My, Shoe" when he needs his shoes tied. We are trying to learn the alphabet, days of the week, counting and more in sign language. I have found that for students with language difficulties, sign language can give them the confidence to participate and excel in class. The kit includes vocabulary cards, a flip chart with important school related signs, a book with school signs, a book with home and community signs, and a CD ROM for the classroom. We appreciate your support of our very special classroom!
