Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a special education class of kinder through sixth graders. They spend a part of the day with me and part with same age peers. My classroom is in rural California and many of my students' families work in the fields of the agricultural industry.
My students, however, dream of being police officers, doctors, and teachers.
As economically disadvantaged and learning disabled students, the odds are stacked against them. The neighborhood where our school is located is notorious for gang violence. School is one of the only safe places for our students. I also teach migrant children after school and work with home/hospital students who are too ill to come to school.
My Project
Benchmark Education is our new English Language curriculum that our district has adopted for next school year. It has some great parts like introducing key text types and literacy skills through shared reading and explicit instruction. Literary big books engage students in enjoying stories and learning to read fiction. Content area big books build non-fiction comprehension and academic knowledge.
However, there is an extensive list of read alouds that align to specific lessons and units and I have only a handful of the needed books.
It will be difficult to acquire all these books for all six of the grades in my special education classroom. This project is specifically for the books on the second grade list, as the majority of my class is reading at a first grade level and these books will provide a challenge for growing readers. It is important to have this content be accessible to my students.
