Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Special Education at the elementary level. Our school is a Title I school, our students are economically disadvantaged, qualify for free breakfast and lunch. The classroom is full of kind, caring and intelligent learners! Our students are a diverse group with students who are served in many different programs, and from all cultural backgrounds. Our campus will transition into a BRAND NEW state of the art building in December 2019 so we are looking for items to take with us to our new inclusive flexible seating classroom.
My Project
My special education students struggle with many mathematical concepts. Manipulatives give these students hands on access to their learning. They can visually see the math happening in front of them in a concrete manner instead of having to attempt to visualize the concept. The students can build the numbers with the base 10 blocks, and physically see the addition and subtraction going on, along with regrouping (which is an extremely difficult concept for my special education students). The fraction manipulatives allow the students to visually see the differences between the different fractions represented. Additionally, if students regularly use the manipulatives in the classroom, they will be allowed to use them for state testing as well.
