I am an Early Childhood Special Education teacher who teaches at a preschool serving children of special needs. I believe that every child can make progress and my paraprofessionals and I work hard to make sure each child is given the attention and support they need to progress in their individualized plans.
80% of the children I work with have severe special needs.
Some are not yet able to walk or talk. Others need emotional, social, or behavioral support. My paraprofessionals and I take delight in working with each one of the children in our care.
My Project
Our classroom consists of preschool children with special needs, the majority of needs are severe. An IPad in the classroom would help our children in the following ways. First, the children will be able to practice phonetics using an app that engages them in letter sounds. Second, they will be able to make requests for items using an icon exchange program app. Third, we can use the IPad as a reinforcement for good behavior or to take a "brain break" by doing a fun academic or music activity on it. Further, we will be able to do testing and assessments using the IPad, which will make the process more fun for the children. We will also be able to use it for data taking purposes, which will help us have a more continuous data system to analyze how the children are progressing on their IEP Goals. This, in turn, will help us more quickly make changes to their learning programs as needed so they can accomplish their goals. An IPad would greatly benefit the classroom experience.
