My Students

My students are in a self-contained special education classroom. Students who qualify for this placement typically need specially designed instructional supports across their core academic areas. Often times students are two or more years below grade level and often have challenging behaviors.

Our classroom instruction is primarily delivered within small groups and is very targeted to students' needs.

To the greatest extent possible, I want to close the gap between these students and their peers. More importantly, I want my students to experience success in school and to see all of our work as applicable and important to their lives.

My Project

This project will meet three main areas of need: 1) expanding our classroom library to include richer and more diverse literature 2) replacing and increasing our fidget/self-regulation tools and 3) restocking basic school supplies.

The students in my special education room come to school with many needs, but we consistently push our students to meet or surpass their general education peers.

We do this by exposing students to rich literature - both easily-accessed graphic novels and compelling chapter books with diverse characters -- and by allowing our students to access any tools they might need to regulate their emotions or their energy levels.

The literature has been carefully selected based on previous students' book interests, as well as input from literature teachers in our district. Many of the books highlight the experiences of students of color, which reflects the diversity in our classroom. Similarly, the fidgets reflect the needs of previous students -- often silent fidget tools helped to regulate my students and allowed them to participate for extended times during seated activities. Finally, there are many items on this list that are simply in short supply in a Title I school (e.g., clorox wipes, laminating envelopes, etc).
