My special education science students have been trying since the beginning of the school year to earn money for a field trip to the Exploratorium and Golden Gate National Recreation Area, but they haven't been very successful. Some are learning about the bay and coastal ecosystem. Others are learning about motion, sound and light. The students read and write far below grade level, so much of their learning is activity based. Assessments are often completed through student participation in group work and projects or presentations.
During this field trip the physical science students will participate in hands-on experiments related to Newton's laws of motion, the Universal law of gravity, and how light and sound travel. They will be provided with choices of equipment with which to develop their experiment. They will also be exposed to geological formations showing how California's coastline was formed. Each student will be required to create a presentation back in the classroom on one topic. They will use computers and the internet to help them create these presentations.
The biology students will also be experimenting with various hands-on exhibits including working with cow's eyes, termites, and fish. They will visit tide pools and record data on the types of sea life and ecosystems they encounter at the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Each of them will be required to create a presentation on one of several topics related to their experiences, again using computers and the Internet back in the classroom.
This is an urban public high school in Richmond, California. Many of our students' families are at or near the poverty level, so parent funding is out of the question. We are not considered a Title I school only because many of our students families neglect or refuse to complete the necessary paper work. We have had no money for field trips for 3 years in our district, which is still recovering from bankruptcy.
I would like to take 50 students and 6 adults. We need funds for the bus and for admission to the Exploratorium.
Please help us provide these students with an experience that will enrich their science education, help them attain proficiency in state science standards, and increase their interest in science careers.
Thank you.
