Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
A very special bunch of kiddos make up my special education preK classroom. Each student with unique developmental needs, makes everyday an exciting new adventure. My students come from a very culturally diverse area of Northern Virginia. 9 out of my 10 students speak a native language at home besides English. Their families come from different parts of the world including Moroco, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Perú, and Guatemala. Together, we make messes, we explore, (sometimes we cry), and then we overcome obstacles, and we grow together! We are a language based program where we learn through play and exploration. There truly is never a dull moment!
My Project
Research has shown that when a classroom's literacy center is set up in a way that is comfortable and inviting, students are more likely to go there and engage with books. This then leads to developing early literacy skills that are critical for young learners to have a great start in elementary school. Our current literacy center is filled with a variety of books, but we do not have comfortable seating options available. Having bean bag chairs next to our library will encourage my students to spend a little extra time examining the pages of our books. The versatility of bean bag chairs also allows me to use them with all of my students, even the ones with special physical needs, which is so important.
