Enthusiastic, energetic, empathetic, creative, inclusive, and motivated are a few words that come to mind when thinking about the young learners in my class. Our class is comprised of eighteen amazing Transitional Kindergartners. Within the class, there are gifted and talented students, students with disabilities, and English language learners. Despite this, the school has received academic achievement awards the past six years, is a California Distinguished School, and a School For Advanced Studies.
"The innocence of children is what makes them stand out as a shining example to the rest of mankind." -Kurt Chambers
These accomplishments are due to the strong partnership between school and home, and we would love to throw the community into the mix, too. This is a school where high academic standards are maintained for all students in a safe and nurturing environment. The faculty and staff are lifelong learners themselves and foster that love of learning in their students. The faculty and staff work hard to ensure that the record of achievement continues.
My Project
My childhood forays to the mailbox were not dutiful grudge work as they often are today as an adult. They were independent adventures that could lead anywhere. There could be anything in there! The next installment from the Dr. Seuss Book Club. An issue of Highlights. Letters from friends who had moved out of state.
I want my students to see the mail as that same invitation to adventure, so I recently made a mysterious science package get delivered to our classroom.
When is the next box coming? Is it Thursday yet? These are all things I hear on a regular basis ever since that first science mystery box was delivered. I want to create that same excitement but this time through literature!
A KinddrgartenCrate is a monthly subscription box that will be delivered to our classroom each month. It includes a read-aloud book, student activities and classroom supplies. The directions state what the materials are used for, activity directions, what standards each one meets. Everything in the box is hands on for the kids and really adds to and expands on what they're learning and makes it more fun.
It”s like a birthday surprise. My student can't wait for the mail for it to arrive. Immediately the class is making predictions as to what it could possibly be! We can learn about predicting or inferring, or both. Listening and talking helps children build their vocabularies. They have fun while learning basic literacy concepts such as: print is spoken words that are written down, print carries meaning, and we read from left to right, from the top to the bottom of a page, and from the front to the back of a book.
The possibilities are endless with this amazing resource.
