Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This year I have 17 special education students in my self-contained Special Day Class. They have a variety of disabilities that affect their ability to learn core academic subject matter, like Reading, Writing, and Math.
Despite their disabilities, I am surprised and encouraged daily by their resiliency and positive attitudes towards learning.
My students are hard-working and want to be successful. That is why I do everything in my power to help them succeed. This includes asking for donations to help fund items for my classroom.
My Project
This year my class contains 18 students. My class consists of the lowest level readers in our school. Many of my 4th and 5th grade students are reading at the preschool and kindergarten levels.
There are limited intervention resources for students with special needs that are provided by our school district.
Special Education teachers, therefore, have to work hard to find the resources necessary to help their students.
I have found a research-based reading intervention program for my students, however I need iPads to deliver and teach the program to these students. The iPads will provide my students more opportunities to access the intervention program.
Learning to read will open up a whole world of possibilities for these students, who struggle to understand and make sense of their education.
