My Students

My students are dealing with a lot of big emotions now that they are facing the realization they will not be returning to the classroom this year. This is especially sensitive for my 8th graders who will now miss out on many of the graduation activities and last experiences with classmates they were looking forward to before heading off to different high schools across our city.

As my students adjust to remote learning, they are often sharing one computer among several siblings in their home and need to have other resources to use while taking turns online.

Many of my students' families may not have the option or funds to buy supplementary materials and books to keep their kids engaged and learning. Space and privacy may be limited at home and serious stressors from COVID 19 are on their minds. They are looking for connection, support and stability, which I am trying to provide them through a consistent remote learning routine.

My Project

My students rely heavily on my classroom library for books to read. Now that they are sheltering-in-place at home with libraries closed through the end of May, they do not have access to high quality, engaging titles to keep them reading. Many of their families do not have the ability or funds to order the books online so they are left without texts.

Providing students new books to read at home helps them maintain their skills and gives them an escape to other places while they may be feeling bored or trapped.

New books they can call their own will help keep their minds active and provide a fun surprise that can infuse a spark of joy and hopefulness into these tough times.
