My school is an urban school in Indianapolis, Indiana and is unique in that we have students from 32 different countries and we have 21 languages spoken by our students and their families. Many of these students are new arrivals to the United States and many are refugees. Others are second generation immigrants. For many of our students, school is the most consistent part of their lives.
The diversity is a wonderful environment to work in and the ESL students are eager to learn to speak, write, read, communicate, and interact in English.
I work with third-grade ESL students and they comprise half of the third-grade population. I love watching their faces light up as they learn new concepts in math, new vocabulary, as they level up in reading, and as they begin to write longer paragraphs. They truly love to learn!
My Project
Often ESL students are nervous to practice speaking their new language and I want to offer them the opportunity to use Kindles and headsets to monitor their growth in this area over the school year.
It is important to make sure that kids don't feel any extra anxiety at school, and in order for my students to succeed, they need technology that will help them practice skills they may hesitate to practice in large group settings.
I will use these Kindles and headsets in both small group settings and also for individual practice. My students will use them during math stations to describe what they notice and wonder about word problems. They will also use them to practice reading fluency and read aloud their own writing. I will also have them do partner speaking activities as they feel more comfortable.
