My students need more fluency reading Spanish books, a dry rack for all of the school banners we make in our Leadership class, and speakers for my computer so the class can hear the video presentations.
On a foothill in the National Scenic Area known as the Columbia River Gorge, in the state of Washington, our small campus is nestled there among the beautiful outstretched views that the area is famous for. It is in a town of just 500 people which runs the length of the Columbia River. We are a small, rural district with beautiful scenery all around us and rich history in our community.
With this much beauty and culture around us, it's a shame that almost 75% of our kids qualify for free and/or reduced lunch, and that over 20% of our kids meet the federal definition of 'Homeless'.
Historically, Lyle School District has performed low in standardized testing measuring reading, mathematics and science, but currently we are being recognized as one of the fastest improving districts in the state! Our kids want to learn, and last year we had one of the most successful graduating classes in recent memory!
My Project
We've got three separate needs in my classroom: a computer speaker so we can hear the video clips and songs we use to remember vocabulary, Spanish Books for our kids to increase their proficiency, and a Dry Rack for all of the amazing banners and posters our Leadership Class makes for the school.
If you walked in my class during a student's presentation, you might see all of us huddling around one little distorted computer speaker trying to hear the sound from the video clips!
Please help us get some new sound so our students can hear the way Spanish ought to be spoken, and so we can use fun songs to remember the vocabulary we are learning.
Our Spanish Class is reading books that are 100% in Spanish to improve their proficiency. We've already read through many of our books time and time again! Some fresh reading would help a lot!
And finally, our school has made a huge cultural shift over the last 3 years to go from a "Priority School" that was failing, to one that has been labeled "Distinguished" for how fast it is improving. One of the ways we have shifted the ethos of the building is by the Leadership Students making inspirational posters and banners that line our hallways. It's impossible to feel down after walking through our hallway! But in order to make this magic happen, we are hoping to use a Laundry Dry Rack to help hang our large banners to dry after we pain them!
