Mrs. Robinson from Baton Rouge LA is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need a triple beam balance, owl pellets, timers, digital thermometers, and basic classroom supplies.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
When my students enter the classroom and see a science lab set up, their eyes light up. They are instantly engaged in science. Providing hands on lab experiences for students is the goal of this project.
My students are 6th and 7th graders taking physical and life science respectively.
I serve students in a somewhat small laboratory school setting with the feel of a family environment. Students under my tutelage seem to thrive in an environment where each child gets to take an active part in the learning process. We serve a predominantly African American student population in an inner city area. A great majority of my students receive most of their exposure inside the classroom. For this reason, I attempt to bring science laboratories and cultural experiences into the classroom as much as possible.
Because we do not have laboratory space in the classroom, I search for ways to expose my students to "laboratory" experiences. Having basic laboratory equipment will allow my students to engage in hands on learning and physically experience science. The triple beam balance, timers, and thermometers will provide equipment for my students to conduct many science activities throughout the year. The classroom supplies provide the equipment for students to work in their lab journals. My seventh grade students come in at the beginning of the year, anxious to dissect anything. Owl pellets are an easy alternative to dissection. The students learn about predatory/prey relationships, the owl digestive system all while feeling like they are dissecting.
My project will provide my students with hands on experiences with real laboratory equipment in preparation for higher science classes.
Having basic laboratory equipment will increase student engagement in the classroom and hopefully encourage students pursue science in their future endeavors.
