Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When my 5th Grade art students saw that the 1st graders had made their own tie-dye shirts in their homeroom, they asked if they could make some in art. I learned when students own an idea in art, they usually do a great job.
I want to surprise them with the tie-dye kits and paints.
My students range in age from k-8th grade, but they all love to create art.
They are new immigrants to our country and art is their favorite class because it is a universal language. I teach in a Title One district which means that the families and area is very poor. It is often hard for them to put enough food on the table in these hard economic times. Art class however, puts a smile on their faces.
My Project
I am requesting 75 white t-shirts so that every student in the 5th grade will have an opportunity to create their own masterpiece. We will need 5 tie-dye kits so we have enough materials to complete all 75 shirts. The kits are packed with the necessary materials. Designing their own shirts will give the students a thrill and enhance their creative ideas. The acrylic paints are basic supplies we need in our art classes on a daily basis. The sets will give each table their own refillable pots so refreshing their supply and clean-up will be easier. Learning to create their own shirts now will be a positive experience that may help them in the future.
Art is important to our daily lives and learning how to decorate clothes is a life-long skill.
My students are very interested in tie-dying t-shirts and will be so excited if I can help their dream come true. They will learn to hang on to their dreams and never give up. They will also have fun creating the tie-dyed shirts and gain self-esteem when wearing them because they made it themselves. They will learn to have faith in themselves.
