My Students

Whenever I tell people I teach middle school, the first reaction is usually something like "How can you stand it?" or "Wow, that must be tough!" with the occasional "Oh, God bless you!" thrown in. I used to feel the same way until I met my first group of seventh and eighth graders. They are the best! Yes, sometimes the hormones go into overdrive, but my students are hysterically fun, have a great desire to learn and are old enough to understand and discuss interesting topics.

This year, I've changed schools, and I look forward to building a space where my new students feel safe and challenged to become their best selves!

While my students don't all share the same culture, most share an economic status. All of our student body receives free breakfast and lunch. Despite all of the challenges that they face, my students come to school willing and eager to learn. They have great plans, hopes and dreams for the future. They are funny and bright and I consider myself lucky to be their teacher.

My Project

I will admit that organization is not my strong suit. I tend to see the big picture, but the small details often escape me. As a result, my room can get messy. I always have good intentions, but often my classroom looks like a bomb went off in it. I have frequently felt overwhelmed by my space.

Over the break, I watched Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netflix, and a lightbulb went off in my head.

Here was the heart of my problem: I simply was holding on to too much stuff. I have recently purged my space of many things I was keeping on the off chance I would need them. I now have a less overwhelming amount of things and my room already looks and feels better. One thing that would make the transformation complete would be appropriate storage for the things I have kept. Lazy Susans to organize markers and colored pencils would allow students to find what they need quickly and easily. Bankers boxes and file folders will allow me to keep student work organized and sorted. Small bins will help to keep the drawers from being a jumbled mess. A laminator would keep important paper items in good condition and able to be used for multiple periods.

Organization tools and supplies would make the classroom a more joyful and peaceful place, a place where clutter did not steal the vibe from our classroom. Thank you for your support!
