I am very fortunate to have the opportunity to loop with first and second graders. That means I teach most of my students for two years. First and foremost I've found my them to have amazing hearts. They are inquisitive, creative, kind, compassionate, silly, as well as eager to learn. They live in an economically depressed area, and learn in a small, rural, school.
At least 50% of my students have experienced trauma and/or have challenges they work through daily.
As STEM jobs are growing faster than jobs overall, I feel it is imperative to inspire my students to grow a desire to help shape our world. We need them to become confident digital citizens that are ready to tackle our world's problems.
My Project
Please help me improve learning in every subject for all my students and beyond by providing access to Dash the coding robot!
Dash Robot will be dashing through all content areas while breaking down equity barriers.
Since Dash offers an open-ended learning platform that makes tech knowledge simple and accessible for all levels, it's perfect for all my students. This robot was specifically designed to spark creativity and ingenuity in elementary students.
Some examples of how we will use Dash include launching and connecting challenges and exploration to pieces of literature. We will use Dash to explore story structure, sequencing in all subjects, measurement, and we'll use the Sketch It tools to explore shapes and create art. Of course we will explore loops by teaching Dash to dance and having a dance party! My English language learners will grow by collaborating with their peers to design boards and using voice commands to direct Dash. Since Dash Robot is also highly motivational, it will also assist my students who suffer from behavioral difficulties in managing and self-regulating their emotions. Dash will teach my students much more than coding. The possibilities of creative problem solving and invention are endless.
