My school is a Title I school that serves approximately 400 students in grades 6-8. One hundred percent of my students receive free or reduced-price lunch and some have no permanent home. Despite this, my students work extremely hard to overcome the many obstacles that they face on a daily basis.
One of the best parts about my school is that we have such a diverse background of students.
Many might not come from a prosperous background, but they soak up every opportunity they have to learn, and this project will help the library gain materials that will help ensure all of my students have materials to be successful.
My Project
The world around us has changed so much the last couple of decades. Technology, especially robotics and programming, is a quickly growing STEM field. It is hard to look at any device that we use, or even career that we have today, and not see the influence that coding has made. It is part of our morning routines with our coffee maker and electric toothbrush. It even follows us on our way to work in our cars by the way of all of the new ways our vehicles work.
Estimates showed that 2.4 million STEM jobs went unfilled in 2018 and approximately 71% of all new STEM jobs are in computing, but only 8% of STEM graduates are in Computer Science This Sphero Bolt will help increase my students' knowledge in coding.
For example, the Sphero will be used to learn block coding, and the students will take those skills to program the device to run through mazes they created. They will also be introduced to geometry skills by coding geometric shapes and using light photography to show the Sphero creating that design--Now that is taking a math lesson to a whole new level.
This project will allow the library to step outside the box and give students a unique opportunity to explore the world of robotics and programming as a career path. By donating to this project, you will help our students love our library and Maker Space even more. It will also give much-needed STEM materials that teachers can use to collaborate within the library.
