Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach Special Education to a wonderful group of students. My students range from first grade to third grade, and sometimes fourth and fifth grade. They are funny, loving, and the most caring students. They try hard every day and push through a lot of self doubt and "I can't" talk. This is something we work on every day. Their abilities range greatly and so do their interests. Some like dinosaurs, some enjoy chapter books, some would rather do math all day, but everyone loves sharks! My classroom is filled with love, acceptance, and hard work. My students never give up on themselves, which is all I could ask for in my tiny humans.
My Project
As we move into the second half of the school year, my students have shown huge improvements and great growth in their reading skills. The greatest growth I have seen is in their confidence in reading. As their reading skills improve and their confidence continues to grow, I need reading material that is suitable for their reading levels. With limited resources, these needs are difficult to meet.
In reading class, my students would rather pick up a book than be on technology, and it is amazing to see!
When not working in small groups with myself or a teacher aid, students are given the opportunity to work on their computers to improve literacy skills. Lately, they have been more interested in books than technology, which is amazing but I do not have many books that reach their grade level needs.
I have a few small book series, but with this project I will be able to provide my students with the opportunities to gain interest in a book series. This project will give students 6 different choices from series like Junie B. Jones to Magic Tree House. This project will also give my students a chance to read challenging material and explore chapter books. Along with my first and second grade students, my third grade students will also have an opportunity to engage in the different book series.
